Minister of Economic Affairs Kuo Jyh-huei participated in a Taiwan-Japan technology dialogue Aug. 30 in Tokyo, spotlighting government efforts to boost supply chain partnerships with Japan, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The event, organized by the Taiwan Japan Academy, focused on economic security and bilateral technology cooperation. During his keynote speech, Kuo elaborated on the government’s work to promote the five trusted industry sectors in the face of rising global demand for servers and semiconductor chips, said the ministry is working to assist Taiwan businesses with investing in Japan, and introduced the country’s training plans for semiconductor personnel to strengthen supply chain resilience. According to Akira Amari, member of the House of Representatives and leader of Japan’s parliamentary caucus for the strategic promotion of the semiconductor industry, semiconductors are the choke point in the development of key infrastructure. It is necessary to ensure that such vital components come from like-minded countries, he said, stressing that Japan and Taiwan both value freedom and democracy and will continue to deepen their friendship. Following the event, Kuo visited leading semiconductor producers in Japan and encouraged them to expand collaboration with their Taiwan counterparts, the MOEA said. The minister also called on enterprises working in regenerative medicine and stem cells, which can help realize the vision of a healthy Taiwan advocated by President Lai Ching-te, the ministry added. The latest MOEA statistics show that Japan is Taiwan’s third largest trading partner and one of its main sources of foreign investment, while Taiwan is Japan’s fourth largest trading partner. Two-way trade was over US$75 billion in 2023. (YCH-E) Write to Taiwan Today at ttonline@mofa.gov.tw
