Taiwan denounces Russian attack on children’s hospital in Ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said July 9 that Russia’s air strike on Kyiv is strongly condemned by the government of Taiwan.   According to the MOFA, the assault damaged the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv and killed or injured dozens of people. The ministry has conveyed condolences to the hospital’s superintendent through the Taipei Representative Office in Poland and announced a donation of US$200,000 for the facility to procure medical supplies, it said, adding that the MOFA will continue to provide assistance when necessary.   Taiwan has donated over NT$900 million (US$27.6 million) to aid Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, of which US$1 million was used to facilitate Okhmatdyt’s purchase of medical equipment, the ministry said.   The MOFA calls on Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity by immediately ending its invasion and restoring peace. Taiwan will continue to fulfill its responsibilities as a force for good and work with like-minded partners to safeguard freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights and the rule of law, the ministry added.   Taiwan is a staunch supporter of Ukraine, as evidenced by its endorsement of a statement that brought more than 40 World Trade Organization member economies together to speak on behalf of Ukraine in February in Abu Dhabi. A short video entitled “Taiwan Stands Up for Freedom” was also released last November to outline how the country’s aid has been used in collaboration with contributions from Czechia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to help Ukrainians directly and at the infrastructural level.   In a post on its official X account, the MOFA said: “No attack on civilians can be justified or forgiven. We join global democracies in condemning Russia’s brutal missile strike, especially the bombing of Kyiv’s Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital—a facility Taiwan has proudly supported. Our hearts are with the affected & all in Ukraine.” (YCH-E)   Write to Taiwan Today at ttonline@mofa.gov.tw
