Taiwanese movies feature at Southern California film festival

Eleven Taiwanese productions will screen at the 2025 San Diego Asian Film Festival, the Ministry of Culture said Nov. 6.   The MOC said the films showing at the festival, including shorts, features and a documentary in the Taiwan Film Showcase category, spotlight the depth and breadth of Taiwan’s vibrant cinema landscape.   Tsou Shih-ching’s “Left-Handed Girl” has been selected as the festival’s closing night film for its emotional depiction of a family striving to hold together as they navigate the challenges of adapting to a new environment. The director will attend the event in person to answer questions and share his experience.   Coming to North American theaters Nov. 14, “Left-Handed Girl” will be submitted as Taiwan’s candidate for best international film at the 2026 Academy Awards.   Other Taiwanese films at the festival include “The Waves Will Carry Us,” the story of a homecoming that turns into an unexpected adventure filled with family drama, cultural misunderstandings and bizarre twists of fate; and “Decathlon: The CK Yang & Rafer Johnson Story,” which documents the rivalry and legacy of two Olympians at the 1960 Games in Rome.   Renowned director Tsai Ming-liang’s “Back Home” will have its West Coast premiere at SDAFF, and the 1969 comedy classic “Accidental Trio” will play in a digitally restored version to delight modern audiences.   The festival runs Nov. 6-15 and showcases more than 150 works from more than 30 countries, the MOC said.
