A Feb. 2-6 visit by a cross-party delegation from Panama’s legislature is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Feb. 2. Led by José A. Pérez Barboni, member of the National Assembly of Panama and executive secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, the group will meet with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and attend a banquet hosted by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung. They will visit the Legislative Yuan, the Mainland Affairs Council, the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s National Health Insurance Administration, and the International Cooperation and Development Fund during their stay. The delegation will also tour Hsinchu Science Park, the Taiwan Space Agency and the Port of Kaohsiung, among other institutions, to better understand Taiwan’s democratic society and the latest politic and economic developments, the MOFA said. The information gained about the country’s high-tech and semiconductor sectors and their key role in the global non-red supply chain will prepare the Panamanian legislators to further explore opportunities to expand bilateral exchanges, the ministry added. According to the MOFA, Taiwan and Panama are important shipping hubs in Asia and the Americas, respectively. The two countries enjoy a close economic and trade relationship, the ministry said, citing the fact that Taiwan was Panama’s second-largest export destination last year. The current delegation is Panama’s second group to visit Taiwan recently, following one last November, the MOFA said. The ministry added that the close exchanges with the Central American country’s legislature build a foundation for the mutual pursuit of beneficial cooperation in open and pragmatic ways.
