Taiwan and the U.S. held the sixth Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue Jan. 27 in Washington, D.C., where the two sides agreed to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence governance, communications resilience and digital industry development, the Ministry of Digital Affairs said. During the meeting, Deputy Minister of Digital Affairs Isabel Hou witnessed the signing of the Joint Statement on the Pax Silica Declaration and U.S.-Taiwan Cooperation on Economic Security. The MODA said the agreement highlights the ministry’s role in advancing digital policy and international collaboration under the Artificial Intelligence Fundamental Act passed in December 2025. In her remarks, Hou noted that trust is central to AI development and said that under the Pax Silica framework Taiwan will serve as a key hub in the global AI hardware supply chain. She added that closer Taiwan-U.S. cooperation will foster a reliable AI ecosystem while addressing potential digital risks. In terms of AI governance, the two sides also discussed the development of a trustworthy traditional Chinese character corpus for large language models. The MODA said the initiative aims to support a diverse and open foundation for sovereign AI. On communications resilience, Hou said the U.S. will support Taiwan in exploring advanced technologies. She added that Taiwan will work with the U.S. and other like-minded partners to safeguard undersea cables and other critical information and communications infrastructure. The ministry said Taiwan is also forging a diversified emergency response network for satellite communications. It is seeking cooperation with U.S. low Earth orbit satellite service providers to strengthen overall resilience. Taiwan will continue working with the U.S. to build a secure and mutually beneficial digital partnership, the MODA concluded. (POC-E) Write to Taiwan Today at ttonline@mofa.gov.tw
