Following Kangana Ranaut's recent public opposition to a caste census in India, the Congress party has criticized the Lok Sabha MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, for being an upper-caste individual who lacks insight into the struggles faced by marginalized communities. Congress leader Supriya Shrinate responded on X, saying, “Today, BJP MP Kangana reiterated her stance: ‘There should be no caste census.’ She questioned why there should be one, saying she doesn't recognize the concept of caste around her. Madam, being an upper-caste, affluent star, and MP, how can you understand the plight of Dalits, backward classes, tribals, or economically disadvantaged individuals from the General Caste? Listen to her full remarks, and Modi ji, it’s time to speak up. If not to us, at least clarify your position to your allies JDU and LJP's Chirag Paswan.” In an interview with The Lallantop, Kangana Ranaut was asked about her views on the caste census. She replied, “My view aligns with Yogi Adityanath's. Saath rahenge nek rahenge, batenge katenge (let’s stay united, remain virtuous. Divisions will lead to our downfall).” “There shouldn’t be a caste census. We don’t even know the castes of actors. The people around me don't concern themselves with caste. So why introduce it now? We didn’t do it before, so why start now?” she questioned. Kangana emphasized that rising violence against women indicates that women, as a marginalized group, need support, not based on caste. “Only three categories exist: the poor, farmers, and women. There should be no fourth category,” she stated. Shrinate, who leads the Congress party's social media and digital platforms, also mentioned that the actor's opinions should be seen as reflecting the BJP’s official position, especially given her apparent disregard for the recent reprimand from the party regarding her comments on the farmers' issue.
