Union Cabinet Approves 'One Nation, One Election' Initiative

The Union Cabinet has approved the government's initiative for "one nation, one election," which proposes simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, along with urban body and panchayat polls to be conducted within the next 100 days. This decision follows the acceptance of a report by a panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The panel, which included Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, expressed a unanimous opinion that simultaneous elections should begin in 2029, according to sources cited by NDTV. It also recommended provisions for a 'unity government' in the event of an indecisive outcome or a no-confidence motion. he 'one nation, one election' proposal was part of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's manifestos for the 2019 and 2024 general elections, but it has faced significant criticism from the opposition, who have raised concerns about constitutional changes and practical challenges. Sources within the steadfast government indicated last month that the proposal would be implemented during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term.
