MP Okudzeto Ablakwa exposes GHS85m stadium maintenance scandal amid CAF ban

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has accused the government of squandering over GHS85 million on stadium maintenance over the past five years, with little to show for it.This follows CAF's decision to ban the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana's sole approved venue for international matches.Consequently, the Black Stars are now seeking an alternative stadium abroad for their upcoming AFCON qualifier against Sudan. In a series of social media posts, Ablakwa alleges that a significant portion of these funds was channelled to companies linked to Kelvin Ofori-Atta, a relative of President Akufo-Addo and former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.His claims come in the wake of a CAF ban preventing Ghana from hosting international matches due to poor stadium conditions.According to Ablakwa, millions of taxpayer cedis were paid to renovate the Essipong, Accra, and Baba Yara stadiums, yet the quality of work remains questionable.Ablakwa provided details on the expenditures: GHS41.9 Million - Essipong Stadium: Contract awarded to Cisdan Company Limited, owned by Kelvin Ofori-Atta. Payments totalling GHS6,853,942.80 were made by October 2023. GHS22.4 Million - Accra Sports Stadium: Renovation agreement with Coupbay Ghana Limited, also owned by Ofori-Atta. Payments of GHS11,223,895.03 were made...
