Two Campbell River teachers have been recognized for their work by getting a regional certificate of achievement. School District 72 says Natalie Raedwulf Pogue, a learning support teacher at Carihi Secondary, and Stephen Joyce, a high school teacher at Timberline Secondary, have both been awarded this certificate for the Prime Minister’s Award for teaching excellence. The award is used to recognize elementary and secondary school teachers for their practices and dedication to helping their students succeed. Natalie was awarded for making more inclusive and supportive spaces for her students by listening to the voices of disabled, neurodivergent, and other marginalized people. Along with advocating for those with autism and other disabilities, she makes sure that her student’s chosen pronouns are respected in the classroom. For Stephen, his work includes mixing subjects like social studies, English, geography, and others with outdoor activities to encourage students to not only connect the curriculum to the world, but to also dream of a better world. The district says his classroom features military uniforms, maps of Middle Earth from Lord of the Rings, and the landscapes of BC. District superintendent Geoff Manning says they both exemplify the dedication, innovation, and passion celebrated by the award. “We are incredibly proud of their achievements and grateful for the positive impact they have on our schools,” said Manning.
