The BC government encourages you to be cautious and plan for wildfire risks this long weekend. In a release, both the Ministry of Forests and Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness say with warm weather and drought conditions increasing the risk of wildfires in some parts of the province, they ask you to be careful. If you are travelling, they say you should check for any road closures, evacuation alerts, evacuation orders, and other prohibitions because of changing conditions. You should also listen to all instructions from your local government or First Nation. For those planning to have campfires, people are advised to follow local prohibitions, avoid having the fire when it’s windy, choose a proper fire pit, and to not leave the fire unattended. To protect your home from wildfires, the government has several tips. They include clearing dry leaves and debris from around your property, keeping propane tanks and other flammables away from structures, keeping grass cut short, closing doors and windows, and follow local restrictions while watering trees, shrubs and plants. If you spot a wildfire or an unattended campfire, you should call BC Wildfire Service at 1 800 663-5555.
