18 people get Medal of Good Citizenship for helping communities

18 people are being recognized by the BC government through the Medal of Good Citizenship. In a release, the provincial government says the medal is given to those who have acted in a very generous, kind, or selfless way for the betterment of their community without expecting a reward. The medal was first established in 2015, and is second only to the Order of British Columbia, the highest honour the province can give to someone. Premier David Eby says all 18 people have made a profound impact on their communities. “By sharing their time, energy and talents, they are making B.C. a better place,” said Eby. The recipients are getting the medal for multiple contributions, including championing affordable housing, pioneering fire rescue, promoting community empowerment, and mental health advocacy. Of those 18 recipients, only one comes from Vancouver Island. Her name is Donna Furneaux, and she’s getting the medal for her lifelong commitment to resilience and community service in Qualicum Beach. The province adds medal presentation ceremonies will take place in August and early September this year.
