Gold-medal-winning Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo is carrying the Canadian flag during the Olympic closing ceremonies today. Katzberg won gold in the men’s hammer throw with a result just a few centimetres short of the all-time Olympic record. It’s the first time in 120 years that Canada has won a gold in any throwing event. He will be joined by swimmer Summer McIntosh, who won three gold medals, the most ever by a Canadian athlete in the summer Olympics, and a silver. She also set two Olympic records. It was the second-best year ever for Canada at a summer Olympics. Canadian athletes brought home 27 medals, nine gold, seven silver, and 11 bronze. The ceremony began at noon, it can be viewed live through CBC Gem. The post Nanaimo gold medalist carrying Canadian flag in Olympic closing ceremonies appeared first on My Campbell River Now.
