Decaying floating lodge off Quadra Island to finally be removed

An old floating resort that’s been rotting in Quadra Island’s Gowlland Harbour for years will finally be removed. The provincial Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship says it’s working with Transport Canada. They will remove the derelict resort, which is on a barge that partially sank in the harbour in 2021, creating a hazard and ongoing nuisance. The owner was ordered to remove it last August, but failed to comply. Now the ministry says the cleanup should be completed in fall, they are working with local First Nations guardians in the meantime to keep debris from spreading. Protection booms are in place. The province has taken legal action against the owner and will attempt to recover clean-up costs through the courts.
