Roundabout on Taylor Rd. in Bracebridge being redesigned

The "overgrown" and "difficult to manage" garden that's part of the roundabout on Taylor Rd. in Bracebridge will be upgraded. Council approved the $56,275 bid from Absolute Landscape and Design Ltd. to handle the project during the Aug. 14 meeting. "Over the last ten years, the Taylor Road Roundabout garden has been maintained by staff and various contractors," it says in a report to council by Nigel Bruneau, parks and trails foreperson, and Scott Clayton, manager of operations. "Yet, even with seasonal maintenance, the garden has become overgrown and difficult to manage. Last year, staff received comments regarding the state of the garden, especially based on its location as one of the focal points entering into the town." Coun. Don Smith said the roundabout "may not be perfect" but believes it's "not a bad looking site." He wondered if this is worth the price tag. Stephen Rettie, chief administrative officer, pointed out the project came in under the previously approved $85,000 budget and will create "operational efficiencies" for the town. "The design, specifically, is to help with weed control by putting in native plants that are easy to maintain," he continued. Rettie added town staff have been told it's not easy for larger vehicles to maneuver through the roundabout, so the work being done will address that, too. Rettie added the redesign could also provide enough space for the town to promote upcoming events. Bruneau and Clayton say in their report the work should be done this fall.
