BC Government to put higher penalties on dangerous drivers

The BC Government looks to keep roads safe by putting higher penalties on dangerous drivers. They say starting September 1, those who drive impaired, are excessively speeding, street racing, or are driving without a license will get higher fees for both the towing and storage of impounded vehicles. This includes paying $110 for towing, and $40 per day for storage. Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth says too many lives have been lost because of reckless and dangerous driving. “We’re making it clear that if you endanger others on our roads, you will face serious consequences, both criminally and financially,” said Farnworth. The province says this change comes after two summers of highway fatalities, with 331 motor-vehicle related deaths reported last year. Of those deaths, 110 of them happened between July and September. Other increases include the Dolly fee costing $40, and $110 for standby, recovery, clean-up, additional services, loading, and securing fee. The province hopes that increasing these penalties can encourage drivers to think twice before doing something dangerous on the road.
