Muskoka launches new Astro-Tourism campaign: Home of the Stars

The region’s night skies are getting the spotlight with the launch of the new astro-tourism campaign Muskoka: Home of the Stars. From Oct. 17 to Nov. 20, Muskoka Tourism is holding a series of free events in collaboration with Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Muskoka Lakes, Bracebridge, Georgian Bay and Lake of Bays.  Val Hamilton, Executive Director of Muskoka Tourism, says the idea aims to take advantage of “Astro-tourism” as more people within the province and country are looking for ways to enjoy stargazing. “There's no better place than Muskoka with our Torrance Burns Dark-sky Reserve, along with other fantastic dark, starry spots in the region,” says Hamilton. She adds they want to grow tourism in the region in a time period that's “typically challenging for Muskoka.” “Typically, people assume Muskoka is just a summer destination. In Muskoka and across the region, we're trying to change that perception and create reasons to come to the region every season of the year and promote the amazing things we have going on,” shares Hamilton. She adds local accommodations typically see lower occupancy levels between late October and late November, and shops and restaurants see less foot traffic. "Astro-tourism is rapidly gaining popularity, and Muskoka provides an extraordinary setting for both amateur and expert stargazers," says Hamilton. "Many people living in urban areas with significant light pollution have never truly experienced the stunning beauty of the night sky and the countless stars visible." She says they are already seeing a lot of interest in the campaign, with over 100 people signing up for the different events. She adds Muskoka will host over 25 stargazing experiences across the region with local experts. Some of the programs include Beginner Stargazing & Astrophotography, Star Stories & Smudging, Gather Under the Moon and more. “We're planning for this to be something that continues so we can continue to grow tourism,” says Hamilton.
