Thanks to volunteers, threatened screech owls around Campbell River now have safe, new homes. Last month the Greenways Land Trust, We Wai Kai First Nation, Madrone Environmental and others launched the Western Screech-owl Conservation and Stewardship Program. Volunteers met at the fish and wildlife hall to build 90 nest boxes for the owls, which are blue-listed in BC and federally classified as threatened. Western Screech-owls have struggled with habitat loss. They have nearly disappeared from the Vancouver, Victoria, and Gulf Islands regions. They prefer dead trees with holes made by woodpeckers. The nest boxes will be installed in Campbell River’s urban forests to help them out, and so volunteers can monitor the population’s health. For more information, or to get involved, visit the Greenways Land Trust website. The post Threatened owls getting new homes in Campbell River forests appeared first on My Campbell River Now.
