Wreckfest 2 – Preview

Wreckfest is one of those titles we pick up once in a while to unwind, as the game is so easy as a pick-up-and-play title. To our surprise, the original Wreckfest was released back in 2018, making it already a fairly old title. Nonetheless, to us, it still feels relevant and rather up-to-date in terms of gameplay. Developer Bugbear, however, decided that it was time for a sequel, promising an even better experience. With Wreckfest 2 now out in Early Access, we were wondering if this second installment would evoke the same experience as the original. The current build immediately throws you into the menus where you can choose between a quick race, a custom race, and online multiplayer. These modes speak for themselves, and they are currently very limited. The game itself looks amazing, however. It’s a huge step up from its predecessor, and seeing your vehicle get dented up (and destroyed) is quite a delight to behold. Of course, don’t expect too much realism, as by the end of a race, you might be driving in something that’s nearly the size of a big suitcase. Your vehicle will also react to the damage by making steering harder, for example. There’s always that gamble of whether you should run into an opponent during a race or not, as your car might become a moving heap of scrap when doing so. At the moment, there is no music in the game, which is a shame. It would have elevated the current content if there had been some music to get that extra adrenaline rush. Handling of the different cars feels noticeably different. We suggest tinkering with the assists if something feels off, as things can feel a bit too floaty at times. Nonetheless, we never felt like we were not in control of our chosen vehicle, and we adjusted accordingly to the event that was chosen. A light car in an arena-like event is not advised, as you’ll find yourself dangling at the bottom of the ranking. However, that lighter car might perform better in a race event with a lot of twists and turns on the track. Even though it was already announced that the Early Access version would only have a limited amount of content, we still expected a bit more for its current asking price. You’ll have only a handful of tracks you can play in even fewer modes. You can opt to race or simply duke it out and rake in the most points. With only four cars to choose from, you’ll have seen everything the Early Access version of Wreckfest 2 has to offer really quickly. This, of course, doesn’t mean that the game doesn’t have loads of replay value and that it’s still a blast to destroy other racers’ cars. We were able to wind down easily after a stressful day by wrecking some other cars. However, we hope more content is added soon. Conclusion Even though the current build of Wreckfest 2 already had a solid foundation, we found it too limited in content to warrant an early purchase. While in short bursts, the gameplay is already a lot of fun, we hoped for a bit more. Nonetheless, the driving mechanics, the mayhem, and the graphics are all on point. We are looking forward to the content updates and the implementation of a great soundtrack, as we are quite sure this sequel will turn out great.
