Indian Troops on Alert at Bangladesh Border, Confirms Hasina's Stay in India

India's foreign minister said his country, which shares a long land border with Bangladesh, had put its border troops on high alert following the collapse of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government. He also confirmed that former prime minister Hasina was in the Indian capital, after leaving the country on Monday (August 5) following weeks of widespread protests led by students. “In a very short time, Sheikh Hasina sought permission to come to India. Simultaneously we received a request for flight permission from the Bangladesh authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi,” Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told parliament on Tuesday. Hasina is one of India's closest allies in South Asia and the dramatic collapse of her government in Bangladesh is a challenge for New Delhi. India has forged strong ties with Bangladesh during her 15 years in power. Hasina resigned after scores were killed in violence against a student-led uprising that erupted last month. Jaishankar said India was in touch with the army in Bangladesh which took over control after Hasina's resignation.
