Pakistan's military announced on Monday that it had arrested the country's former intelligence chief and started court-martial proceedings against him on charges of malfeasance, corruption and violating army regulations. The arrest of retired general Faiz Hameed, who served as the chief of intelligence (ISI) from 2019 to 2022, is unusual in Pakistan. The country's powerful military has ruled for more than 30 years since the country gained independence in 1947. The military continues to wield significant influence. The military noted in Monday's announcement that the arrest came after a Supreme Court-ordered investigation into Mr. Hameed. The army stated that during the investigation they were confirmed 'numerous cases of violations of the Pakistan Army Act'. Mr. Hameed's name was widely mentioned in the local media for his alleged involvement in national politics and his influence over journalists during his tenure as ISI chief. The general drew global attention when reporters saw him at a hotel in Kabul shortly after the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021. The Taliban returned to power as US-led Western forces withdrew after nearly two decades of war in Afghanistan.
