Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, told reporters on Tuesday (13/8) that the floods were affecting hundreds of thousands of people in the central and western African region. The spokesperson said that “heavy rains and extensive flooding have affected more than 700,000 people in the Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Mali and Togo.” On Friday (9/8), the UN refugee agency said that flood conditions in Sudan had hampered aid deliveries to areas where many people are already facing famine. The agency said in a statement that at least 11,000 people in Sudan, many of them already displaced, were affected by heavy rains and flooding. Haq said to combat the floods, “The UN and our partners are supporting the government’s response in the region, including the distribution of food, shelter, and water and sanitation assistance.” He concluded his remarks by saying that this year, “the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, allocated $10 million to Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger to respond to emergencies related to climate shocks, including floods.” (ab/ns)
