US National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said the US was watching reports of Russian troop movements, but could not say what they believed Vladimir Putin's intentions were. This comes as Ukrainian forces continued a major cross-border offensive into Russia's Kursk region for a second week. On Wednesday, they claimed to have seized more territory, captured more Russian prisoners and destroyed a bomber jet. “On Russian movements, we see some Russian units being diverted from operations in and around Ukraine to the Kursk region. But these are just the initial reports that we are seeing,” he said. The Ukrainian military commander said that since Wednesday morning, the invading forces had advanced one to two kilometers in some areas of Kursk. He also said that Ukrainian forces had detained more than 100 Russian soldiers. Ukraine's surprise incursion into Russian territory that began on August 6 rocked the Kremlin. The ambitious Operation Kursk was the largest offensive against Russia since World War II and involved up to 10,000 Ukrainian troops supported by armored vehicles and artillery. (ps/uh)
