Nicaragua Closes 1,500 Non-Governmental Organizations

Managua — Nicaragua has closed another 1,500 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), a government statement said Monday, just days after the country passed a law requiring NGOs to work exclusively in “partnership alliances” with state institutions. Daniel Ortega’s government has jailed hundreds of opponents, both genuine opponents and perceived enemies, and closed thousands more NGOs since protests against the regime in 2018 were met with a violent crackdown that has left more than 300 people dead, according to the UN. Monday's announcement is the largest single targeting of NGOs to date, accusing them of failing to report their income. Ortega's government views the 2018 protests as a Washington-backed coup attempt. Last month, a group of UN experts condemned “systematic and widespread violations of international human rights law” in the Central American country. The Nicaraguan Red Cross and a number of Catholic charities are among the NGOs being closed down, often on charges that are widely dismissed as false. Ortega's wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, described religious people as “children of the devil” or “agents of Satan” who carry out “spiritual terrorism.” In late 2023, some 30 religious leaders were imprisoned and then expelled from the country, to the Vatican.
