Kosovo, the challenges in alleviating the poverty rate

In Kosovo, the law on the social assistance scheme does not allow employed persons to receive assistance from the state, regardless of whether they are classified as poor. Such an approach has been criticized by institutions such as the World Bank, while the authorities say that the social assistance system is in the process of being reformed. According to the data of the Statistics Agency, about 18 percent of the population in Kosovo lives in poverty, while five percent in extreme poverty. For Nazmi Korapni, 61 years old, the day starts at six o'clock in the morning. Every day he walks from his home, in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the capital, to the green market in Pristina. With an old cart, Nazmiu carries citizens' purchases from the market to their homes for a payment of five euros. “We have difficulties because sometimes there is and sometimes there is no work in the market. There is not even enough work because there are many who are working with a cart.
