China's Confucius Institute attracts students to South Africa

Confucius Institutes of China teach Chinese language all over the world, but language is not the only thing they offer. VOA correspondent Kate Bartlett visited a new center located hundreds of kilometers outside the capital in rural South Africa that also focuses on green technology. These South African students are learning something new. “Learning Chinese is a wonderful thing,” says one of the students in the Chinese language class, Tshililo Khwathisi. Mandarin dialect is taught at the University of Venda. It is one of hundreds of Confucius Institutes opened by China around the world, about 60 of which are in Africa. But this Institute, which opened earlier this year, is slightly different from those in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The University of Venda is located in a remote rural area. “At the Confucius Institute of Green Technology – first we focus on teaching Chinese, and then we will combine language learning with green technology. So when they learn the language fluently, they can go to China to study further, to gain more knowledge about green technology,” says teacher Zhang Duo.
