Top EU Diplomat Urges Countries to Do More for Gaza

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said countries must do more and faster to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, describing the situation in Gaza as a man-made tragedy. Visiting the Egyptian side of the Rafah border on Monday (9/9), Borrell said: “One horror cannot justify another horror.” He stressed that the European Union would continue to support Palestine but there needed to be a political solution. “Because feeding someone dinner to be killed tomorrow is not the right solution,” he said. When asked about the possibility of deploying peacekeeping troops in Gaza, Borrell said that was not yet possible, but that law and order must eventually be restored to prevent the Gaza Strip from becoming a “new Mogadishu.” “Someone has to maintain public order in Gaza. I don't know who, but certainly, first of all, the Palestinian Authority is responsible for that. However, I think the Palestinian Authority will need a lot of support if law and order is to be restored in Gaza,” Borrell said. Borrell met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi on Monday. He is scheduled to address the League of Arab States on Tuesday. (the/s)
