Thousands of supporters of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan rallied on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad on Sunday (8/9), demanding the politician's release. Khan has been in jail for more than a year in connection with more than 150 police cases. Pakistan's current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's main rival remains a popular figure despite being embroiled in a series of cases that critics and his party say are politically motivated. Khan was ousted in 2022 through a no-confidence motion in parliament. Sunday's rally was one of the largest held by Khan's opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI, party this year. It was largely peaceful, although police clashed with some activists. In a statement, Khan's spokesman, Zulfi Bukhari, condemned the police action against his “peaceful” supporters. Earlier, authorities had blocked off major roads with shipping containers to prevent Khan's supporters from attending the rally. “God willing, we will release Imran Khan soon,” Ali Amin, a top elected official in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said at the rally, giving the government a two-week ultimatum for his leader's release. Khan has been in prison since 2023. He was arrested after being sentenced in a corruption case. (ka/lt)
