Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Thursday dissolved the opposition-dominated parliament, paving the way for snap legislative elections six months after he was elected on an anti-establishment platform. New elections will be held on November 17, Faye said in a televised address on Thursday night in which he asked voters to give his party a mandate so he can carry out “the systemic transformation I promised.” According to some analysts, Faye's political party, PASTEF, has a high chance of becoming a majority, given the party's popularity and its margin of victory in the presidential election last March. The opposition platform Benno Bokk Yaakar led by former President Macky Sall condemned the move. They alleged that Faye had called a legislative session under false pretenses to announce the dissolution, accusing him of “perjury.” Faye, 44, won elections in March and became Africa's youngest elected president, less than two weeks after he was released from prison.
