Japan's chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi announced his intention to seek leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party on Tuesday. In a speech at a news conference in Tokyo, Hayashi apologized for the scandal involving the party's political funding and vowed to restore public trust. “I am very committed to doing everything to restore trust in the party and implement meaningful politics for the people,” he said. He is the fourth party member to announce his candidacy, after Digital Minister Taro Kono, former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba and former Economic Security Minister Takayuki Kobayashi announced their candidacies this month. Japan will hold an election on September 27 to choose a new leader after Prime Minister Fukio Kishida made a surprise announcement last month that he would step down. (jm/ab)
