Pope Francis to Begin Asia, Oceania Tour Next Week

Pope Francis will begin the longest foreign trip of his papacy next week, visiting four countries in Asia and Oceania during a grueling 11-day trip. The 87-year-old pope is scheduled to visit Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore, on a trip that will emphasize economic and religious diversity. The Pope has faced challenges and health concerns of late, and this trip will be his first overseas visit in 2024. Francis was forced to cancel a visit to Dubai in November to recover from a bout of flu and pneumonia. His poor health has also forced him to cancel several public events this year. Pope Francis currently requires a wheelchair or cane to walk because he also has mobility difficulties due to ongoing problems with his knees. Poor health has raised doubts about Francis' ability to complete his 11-day visit to four countries. “I was very surprised when they announced a trip like this. Why four countries? Why so far?
