Trump Plans to “Revive” Mineral Deal with Ukraine

Trump announced that he intends to "revive" the mineral resources agreement with Ukraine. The statement from the U.S. president was reported by CNN. According to Trump, the deal is necessary because Zelenskyy "won’t be too happy" without it. Trump also once again called for elections to be held in Ukraine, which is currently under martial law. When asked whether he could revive the deal, Trump responded: "Yes, I think I will revive this deal. You know, we’ll see what happens, but I am going to revive it. Otherwise, he (Zelenskyy) won’t be too happy. And look, it’s time for elections." Trump had recently criticized Zelenskyy for refusing to sign the agreement on the development of Ukrainian mineral resources. His National Security Advisor Mike Waltz also linked Trump’s sharp statements about Ukraine to Zelenskyy’s refusal to sign the deal. Later, Trump commented on possible peace talks with Russia. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Russia "holds the cards" in any potential peace negotiations to end the war because it has "seized a large territory." He shared this view with BBC while on his flight to Washington. Trump expressed his belief that Russia wants the war to end, despite having initiated the full-scale invasion nearly three years ago. "I think the Russians want the war to end. I really do. I think they have the upper hand because they’ve seized a large territory. They have the upper hand," said the U.S. president. When asked if he believes Russia wants peace, Trump answered, "Yes." Trump also supported Russia’s demand for elections to be held in Ukraine during the war and claimed that Zelenskyy’s approval rating is at 4%, a statement that was inaccurate. In response, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy countered that his American counterpart had fallen victim to Russian disinformation, pointing to a recent poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KMIS), which shows 57% trust in him. Zelenskyy also rejected claims that the U.S. provided 90% of all aid to Ukraine, calling that information false. Later, Trump again called Zelenskyy a "dictator" and criticized him for refusing to sign the agreement on the development of Ukrainian mineral resources.
