Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Chin-tsang led a delegation to the 31st Asia Pacific Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting Sept. 5 in Jeju, South Korea, underscoring government commitment to advancing domestic businesses. The conference was hosted by Han Seong-sook, minister of SMEs and startups, and focused on small businesses as engines of sustainable and inclusive growth. The Ministry of Economic Affairs said that participants discussed the applications of digital technology, carbon reduction and green transition, as well as public-private collaboration. During the forum, Ho shared that Taiwan’s government has helped academic and research institutions set up businesses, and is actively encouraging medium and large corporations to establish startup accelerators in order to develop domestic and overseas markets. The minister presented Free Bionics Taiwan Inc., based in Hsinchu City, as an example. Originally a startup team that received a research subsidy from the MOEA and was provided with technology by the Industrial Technology and Research Institute, also in Hsinchu, the company has successfully developed smart rehabilitation technology that is now in use by more than 60 medical and care agencies around the globe. In a joint statement released following the meeting, the ministers in attendance emphasized the importance of an innovative ecosystem to the development of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, and called for the continued adoption of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to enhance productivity and operating efficiency, as well as multinational public-private cooperation to boost links among MSMEs, the MOEA added.
