Renowned Ghanaian female referee, Joyce Appiah Obenewa, has announced her retirement after a distinguished 15-year career.The decision comes into effect on August 1, 2024.Obenewa, who began her refereeing journey as an assistant before ascending to become a centre referee in 2013, has officiated at the highest level of Ghanaian football and represented the country on the international stage.Her resume includes matches in the WAFU and World Cup Youth Championship qualifiers, as well as various international club competitions.In a heartfelt letter to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Obenewa expressed her gratitude for the opportunities afforded to her and acknowledged the time had come to step aside for the next generation of referees.The GFA, in turn, has praised her contributions and pledged to continue engaging her in the development of women's refereeing.Obenewa's retirement marks the end of an era for Ghanaian women's football, but her legacy as a trailblazer will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
