Ghanaian defender Sumaila Awudu leads Clermont Foot B to draw in season opener

Young defender Sumaila Awudu has kicked off the 2024/25 football season on a strong note, leading Clermont Foot B to a 1-1 draw against Lyon la Duchère in the French National Championnat 3.The home team initially took the lead, but Clermont Foot B fought back with an equalizer from Amine Bouchena, ensuring both sides shared the points.Awudu, 19, who joined Clermont Foot in the summer of 2023, has quickly made his mark. After impressing with the U-19 side, he earned a promotion to the reserves.In his debut as captain, he showcased his versatility by playing as a left-sided centre-back in a three-man defence, earning praise from supporters at Duchère Stadium.A product of the JMG Academy, Awudu is determined to continue his upward trajectory, with hopes of breaking into Clermont Foot’s first team, which competes in Ligue 2.Next up, Clermont Foot B will take on Évian Thonon on September 7 at Stade Gabriel-Montpied (annexe 2). Awudu will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of Alidu Seidu and Salis Abdul Samed, who successfully made the jump to the Clermont Foot first team.
