Caracas — Former Venezuelan presidential candidate Enrique Márquez announced on Wednesday (8/14) that he would request a criminal investigation into several members of the National Electoral Council for “conspiring” against the state. Márquez, one of ten candidates in Venezuela's highly disputed presidential election, said the council's five top members were responsible for the unrest after the election. Márquez, who was once a member of the council, also said that what was at stake was not the victory of one candidate, but democracy. His comments come amid an investigation into the election vote count being conducted by Venezuela's Supreme Court at the request of President Nicolás Maduro. The Supreme Court is closely aligned with Maduro's government. Its judges are nominated by federal officials and ratified by the National Assembly, which is dominated by Maduro supporters. “As citizens, we cannot allow state institutions to prostitute themselves and no longer comply with the Constitution,” Márquez said. He also referred to a report issued by a UN panel of experts that questioned the transparency and integrity of Venezuela's recent presidential election.
