Thousands of Ukrainian Soldiers Said to Attack Russia to Destabilize

Thousands of Ukrainian troops have invaded Russia's Kursk region to “weaken” and “destabilize” Russia, a senior Ukrainian security official told reporters. AFP. “We launched the attack to stretch the enemy's positions, inflict maximum losses and destabilize the situation in Russia because they cannot protect their own borders,” the anonymous official said Saturday night. The Russian military earlier said Ukraine had deployed about 1,000 troops in the offensive that began Tuesday, surprising the Kremlin as Ukrainian forces breached Russian defense lines. When asked if 1,000 Ukrainian troops took part in the attack, the official said: “It was much higher… thousands.” After days without an official response from Ukrainian authorities, President Volodymyr Zelensky finally acknowledged the operation in a speech on Saturday night, stating that Kyiv was “pushing the war into the territory of the aggressor.” (ah)
