Geneva — World Health Organization officials (World Health Organization/WHO) said Israel had given the green light to UN agencies to begin vaccinating hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip against polio. Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said a mass polio vaccination campaign to immunize more than 640,000 children under the age of 10 against the crippling disease will begin on Sunday, September 1. Speaking from Deir al Balah in central Gaza, Peeperkorn told reporters in Geneva on Friday that Israel had agreed to a series of humanitarian pauses. “We want to emphasize that without the humanitarian pause, the implementation of the (vaccination) campaign, which is already being carried out under very complex and challenging circumstances, would not have been possible,” Peeperkorn said. “So, we welcome the initial commitment to a region-specific humanitarian pause during the campaign,” he said.
