Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Saturday that his country is unlikely to join the European Union in 2028, a deadline targeted by several other Western Balkan countries that aspire to join the bloc. He made the comments during a discussion at the Globsec forum in Prague, contrasting him with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic, who said his country, currently a NATO member, hopes to join the European Union by in the year 2028. The Serbian president said that he does not believe in such a possibility and according to him, the membership of any of the countries of the Western Balkans cannot happen before 2030. Serbia is trying to maintain a balance between its aspirations for European Union integration and maintaining ties with Russia, which supports Belgrade in its opposition to Kosovo's independence, which was declared in 2008. Serbia has condemned Russian aggression in Ukraine and supplies Kiev with artillery ammunition, but has refused to join sanctions against Moscow. Two days ago, Serbia reached an agreement with France for the purchase of 12 Rafale military aircraft, in what was seen as a change in the path of its cooperation with Russia in the field of defense.
