Ukrainian Air Force Commander Fired After F-16 Crash

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, through a presidential decree, Friday (30/8), dismissed Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk. The dismissal was announced just a day after the Ukrainian military reported that an F-16 jet crashed and its pilot was killed while repelling a major Russian attack on Monday. “I have decided to replace the commander of the Air Force… I am very grateful to all our military pilots,” Zelenskyy said in his evening speech. He did not give specific reasons for the dismissals, but stressed the need to protect personnel and strengthen command levels. The Ukrainian General Staff said that Lieutenant General Anatoliy Kryvonozhka would temporarily assume the duties of commander. The Ukrainian military did not explain the cause of Monday's crash, but confirmed that the jet went down as it approached a Russian target. Oleshchuk also said that U.S. partners were involved in the investigation. The crash did not appear to have been caused by Russian gunfire, according to a U.S. defense official who spoke to Reuters. Potential causes such as pilot error or mechanical failure are being investigated.
