White House Dismisses Concerns That Hamas Leader Indictments Will Complicate Ceasefire Talks

VOA — The United States on Wednesday (4/9) dismissed concerns that criminal charges filed against Hamas leaders over the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel would complicate ongoing negotiations to reach a ceasefire deal in Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages held by Hamas. On Wednesday, the Israeli military said 200 Hamas fighters in the southern Gaza city of Rafah had been killed. A day earlier, the U.S. Justice Department indicted six Hamas leaders in connection with the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel. Regarding the charges, Merrick Garland, US Attorney General, gave his reasons, “For funding and directing a decades-long campaign to kill American citizens and endanger the security of the United States.” The three indicted Hamas leaders, Ismail Haniyeh, Marwan Issa, and Mohammed Deif, are believed to have been killed by Israel. The other three include the group's top leader, Yahya Sinwar, who is key to ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in exchange for a hostage release agreement. As demonstrations continue in Israel demanding a deal, the Biden administration has dismissed concerns that the indictments will make it harder to reach a deal.
