Israel Bombs Khan Younis, Agrees to Continue Gaza Ceasefire Talks

VOA — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Friday (August 9) that it had launched an attack involving ground troops, fighter jets, helicopter gunships and paratroopers in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza, the third ground operation carried out by the IDF since Hamas' October 7 offensive against Israel. Israel said the operation in Khan Younis was in response to Palestinian rocket attacks and “intelligence indicating the presence of terrorists and terror infrastructure.” Residents and displaced people were ordered to leave the area, where many had only returned in recent days after Israel's last attack on the town in July. US and Israeli officials say that Khan Younis is believed to be Yahya Sinwar's hiding place. Sinwar was the mastermind of last year's October 7 attack, who was recently appointed to replace Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh was killed in the Iranian capital, Tehran, in an airstrike widely believed to have been carried out by Israel.
