Moscow and Beijing benefit each other as much as possible, – expert

The NATO summit declaration with harsh language addressed to the People's Republic of China in connection with its support for the Russian Federation will not change anything in the relationship between Beijing and Moscow. Russia is beneficial for China for a number of reasons: economic, energy, ideological, security issues. This opinion was expressed by Alina Gritsenko, Ph.D. in political science, chief consultant of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, on the FREEDOM TV channel. “Today it is unlikely that Moscow and Beijing will change these relations. They are maximally beneficial to each other. For China, of course, to a greater extent. Because China, in fact, is exploiting Russia - the opportunities that Russia has, in particular, resources,” the guest of the broadcast comments. According to Gritsenko, the wording regarding China in the Alliance declaration is indeed quite harsh, but earlier NATO had already identified China as a challenge for itself, while Russia was identified as a threat. “This also speaks volumes about the transformation of the Alliance’s attitude towards China. Plus the fact that for the third time in a row the leaders of South Korea and Japan have been invited to the summits. These are Asian countries located in the immediate vicinity of China. This also speaks of NATO’s desire to expand its functionality, including to the Pacific region. And this is precisely what infuriates China so much, this is what is so unnerving and annoying. Especially the concept that [NATO Secretary General] Jens Stoltenberg is promoting about a global NATO. In 2022, he was in South Korea and Japan on tour,” the expert recalled. She explained that we are not talking about these countries joining the Alliance, or about interaction in certain areas, for example, about the exchange of intelligence or cybersecurity. China regards this as an invasion of its sphere of interests and, most importantly, its region. Gritsenko believes that the Belarusian-Chinese military exercises are Beijing’s response to the Alliance. “China is using Belarus in this way as a trigger and is trying to demonstrate that if NATO can get closer to China, then China can at some point get closer to NATO’s borders,” the political scientist explained. Let us recall that at the North Atlantic Alliance summit in Washington, a declaration with harsh wording regarding the People's Republic of China was adopted. The document states that China has become a decisive factor in Russia's war against Ukraine through its so-called “no restrictions” partnership and large-scale support for the Russian defense industrial base.
